Although it would be nice for dentures to last forever, they don’t, which means changes will occur that require replacements and relinements. Knowing what to look for and when to seek help is essential if you want to avoid oral sores, discomfort, and potential damage. As you continue to embrace your new smile, consider what signs to watch out for that might indicate it’s time to improve your denture fit and what you can expect from a reline.

What Causes Dentures to Fit Poorly?

Dentures may be able to replace the visual appearance of missing teeth; however, they do not restore the structure beneath the gumline – the root. As a result, there is nothing to provide stimulation to the jawbone, which is necessary to keep the face and oral cavity strong and supported.

Over time, the jawbone will experience resorption, which not only causes additional tooth loss but also facial sagging and changes to denture fit. The result can be discomfort and potential damage if a reline is not provided.

What Signs Indicate It’s Time for a Reline?

You will need a reline if:

  • You develop sores on your gums, or these soft oral tissues become irritated
  • Your denture feels loose
  • An infection forms
  • Your dentures are losing their grip, making it hard to keep them stable in your mouth

Remember, you should never try to reline your denture on your own. Doing so can lead to damage to your prosthetic teeth as well as any remaining natural ones you might have.

What is the Process of a Reline?

When talking to your dentist about a reline, you can expect they will go over how it is performed.

The process involves adding material to the part of the denture that rests against your oral tissues (i.e., roof of the mouth, gums, etc.). By creating a cushioned barrier, the prosthetic will fit more comfortably while also providing a snug fit.

There are two types of relines: soft and hard. While soft ones generally occur immediately following the placement of dentures after oral surgery, hard relines are likely to be performed every few years. It may require a few days for your dentist to complete the process (if performed in-house).

Make sure your smile remains comfortable and snug-fitting by having your dentures relined the moment you notice a change in how they feel. Doing so will ensure you avoid discomfort and instead enjoy your smile in the long run.
