Sometimes in life, it’s easy to tell when it’s time to replace something. When your car needs gas, an indicator light (hopefully!) goes on. When you’re out of hand soap, the pump starts dispensing air. But how can you tell when you need a new denture? Here are some telltale warning signs that your prosthetics are nearing the end of their lifespan, no check-engine light required!
Farewell Old Friend: Warning Signs for Denture Departure
No matter what your dentures are made of, they generally last between seven and ten years. If yours have lasted longer than this, be sure to have your dentist check them to make sure they’re functioning properly.
There are a variety of reasons your dentures may need to be replaced either within the seven-to-ten-year window, or even sooner. Here are a few:
- Fit changes: over time, your denture fit will change due to shifts in your bone structure. The same can also be true if you don’t wear them frequently. This can often make them fit too tightly.
- Broken teeth: if the artificial teeth or other portions of your dentures break, this doesn’t always mean you’ll need to completely replace them. They may be able to be repaired. Still, be sure to have them assessed by your dentist as soon as possible and never attempt to fix them yourself.
- Broken base: should the base of your dentures break, you will need to replace them, as they will no longer be functional.
- Deep stains: with time, dentures can develop tiny cracks or fractures, which can cause them to accumulate stains and bacteria buildup. This can put you at risk for a gum infection, which can be very dangerous to your oral and overall health.
- Unexplained pain: when dentures don’t fit right, they can cause aches and pains, including in areas like your neck, shoulders, back, or mouth.
Why Do I Need to Replace My Dentures?
While getting a new pair of dentures can be exciting, it’s also understandable to not want to upgrade, especially if your current pair are still comfortable. The great thing about new prosthetics, however, is that you get a fresh start at a gorgeous smile. After a brief adjustment period, they’ll be as comfortable as your old pair once was, all the while helping you chew, speak, and eat with ease!
Remember, your dentures were designed to serve your needs by restoring the appearance and function of your smile, but they weren’t meant to last forever. When it’s time to upgrade to a new pair, speak to your dentist and get back that glowing grin you’re known for!
