Your dental implants were designed to replace lost permanent teeth. Although they are meant to remain securely attached to your jawbone for a lifetime, once the healing process is complete you should not feel your prosthetic. So, what happens if you do? Here’s why pain surrounding your dental implant could be a warning sign of failure, and why you need to act as quickly as possible to stop it!

Why Does My Dental Implant Feel Sensitive?

Experiencing sudden sensitivity surrounding your dental implant can come as quite a surprise.  Because it’s not a “real” tooth, you should not feel anything whatsoever once the osseointegration period is completed. Unfortunately, if you do notice any sensation from the area, it could mean that your dental implant is failing, and you should schedule an emergency appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Here are some other warning signs to look out for:

  • Loosening of the dental implant.
  • Receding gums surrounding the implant.
  • Swollen, puffy, red gums.
  • Pain when chewing with the implanted tooth.
  • Discomfort or pain surrounding the implant when not in use.

There are a number of reasons a dental implant can fail; however, it is most frequently caused by one of two things: failed osseointegration or peri-implantitis, a gum infection similar to periodontal disease.

Next Steps: Implant Salvage

If you notice any sensation surrounding your dental implant, time is off the essence. Reach out to your dentist as soon as possible, as the sooner you act, the better the odds are that your implant can be salvaged. In some cases, your dentist can remove the failing implant and re-implant it following treatment of the underlying cause of failure.

Tips for Preventing Dental Implant Failure

Dental implants boast an impressive 95 percent success rate, even ten or more years after placement. This means that the for success are in your favor. But it also means that you need to do your part to protect your smile. Here are a few ways to give your prosthetics the best odds possible:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily.
  • Never smoke, vape, or use tobacco products.
  • Never use your dental implants for anything but chewing food.
  • Wear a bite guard or mouthguard if you grind your teeth or play contact sports.
  • Maintain your regular, biannual dental check-ups and cleanings even if you have no remaining natural teeth.

Remember, you should never be able to feel anything surrounding your dental implant, but if you do notice any sensitivity or other symptoms mentioned above, please contact your dentist as soon as possible to help protect your implant and your smile.
